Principles of the Humanists UK mentoring programme

The key principles of the Humanists UK mentoring programme are:

  • The training of new celebrants includes the allocation of a mentor to each trainee.
  • The mentor will guide, support and provide observation for the trainee to observe them working as a celebrant.
  • All Humanists UK Ceremonies mentors are accredited celebrants who have undertaken the Humanists UK mentors training programme in full or refresher form.
  • Mentors will be appointed for a fixed term and will be expected to maintain their CPD, continue to conduct ceremonies and work to the values of Humanists UK.
  • Ideally mentors will be allocated trainees who are close geographically, but in some cases they will act as distance mentors.
  • All mentors will have completed the Humanists UK mentors course.
  • Mentors are appointed for a fixed term of five years. After five years, we  will contact you to see if you wish to continue in the role. mentors who wish to continue will need to  still meet the criteria for being a mentor, as follows:

    • practicing as a Humanists UK celebrant
    • having no complaints upheld against them
    • having received a positive report from the training team (including response to emails concerning trainees, input into assessment during the training)
    • All mentors have to ensure their own CPD to enable them to carry out this role well.
  • It is a paid role
